Continuous Extension Integration

What?

CiviCRM core now offers a Continuous Integration service to partner & member organisations on their extensions. The service will run the unit tests associated with an extension whenever a PR is submitted to that extension. This is similar to the process that runs on core and is driven by jenkins and runs on the same test infrastructure. There are free services that do this (e.g Travis) on github in general but they don’t provide the CiviCRM setup and database environment that is needed to run tests on CiviCRM.

Why?

Basically because I wanted it & I paid the core team to do the technical work to make this an offering :-). This is something I’ve pushed for and I chose to fund it personally with financial help from Joe Murray from JMA Consulting to make it happen.

Erm still why?

I was finding that I was spending a lot of my own time dealing with regressions in various extensions that I have written such as Extended Reports and Omnipay - many of them as a result of me accepting community code contributions into them. I felt like it was worth it to me personally to spend some money to make this less painful. If you use these extensions you might like to contribute to the next phases to save me from having to.

What specifically is on offer right now?

Extension CI service on github - you can have up to 6 extensions under CI for $100 per month. (provided you are already a partner or member organisation) with a $500 set up fee . Extra extensions for $15 per month. Whenever a PR is submitted the probot listener will run the unit tests that you have written for the extension. You are responsible for getting the tests working & fixing any issues.

In general the setup fee pays for the development of the CI service to meet the above goals whereas the monthly fee goes towards the server resources and various admin & support overheads incurred. Currently we are in need of more server resources so a couple of sign ups would allow the Core team to purchase more capacity.

What is the road map on this?

There are 3 goals from my point of view

  1. Extension CI service (as currently offered) to run CI on PRs submitted to those extensions

  2. Extension CI service extended to also run the extension unit tests on latest master when a PR is submitted against master. These will be visually separated from the main core unit tests but if they start failing for an extension for reasons that relate to the extension, not a core change, they will be disabled until the extension author fixes them. I anticipate that once this is developed it would be included in the $100 per month

  3. Fork CI service - many organisations have their own CiviCRM forks with patches they are still working on / upstreaming. This service would run the core unit tests against these forks as PRs are submitted to them. Tarballs would be generated for deployment, as happens on the main branch. This would have a separate pricing and would be more expensive than the CI service as it would have higher server resource needs.

Further technical development to be done as funded. The steps below are each expected to cost between $800 & $2000.

  1. Update the service to support gitlab as well as github

  2. Improve php version coverage - add in php 7.3, possible multiple 7.x versions

  3. Update civicrm-core PR testing to go through the same civibot integration

  4. Add CI on core PRs to extension service purchasers (depends on step 3)

  5. Add support for running CI on forks (depends on step 3)

CiviProspect

Is CiviProspect for me?

CiviProspect provides the core structure for creating/ managing/ converting the fundraising opportunities of an organisation. It can also be used to manage any monetary opportunities such as sales opportunities and event sponsorships.

Create prospects

CiviProspect inherits all the features from CiviCase. You are able to create prospects in the system with your designed prospect stages and relationships/ roles. Additionally, you can record prospect-specific information such as budgeted amount, prospect amount, probability, expected date and restriction code (if applicable).

Manage prospects

You are able to keep all of your prospect expectation up to date by updating the probability, amounts and dates. You also have a chance to update these information when you move a prospect from one stage to another.

When a prospect becomes successful, you can easily convert the prospect into a contribution/ pledge. The payment progress will be shown on the relevant prospect. You are able to view the linked contribution/ pledge from each prospect.

Prospect reporting

Since CiviProspect is an extended part of CiviCase, all CiviCase reports in CiviCRM can be used to report on CiviProspect. Apart from these default reports in CiviCRM, we also integrated CiviProspect with the powerful Pivot Reports extension. Install the extension and you can start create your own flexible prospect reports!

How do I get CiviProspect?

Manual is designed to work with CiviCRM 4.7.x or 5.x plus. If you are on an earlier version of CiviCRM, you will need to upgrade your site first or contact info@compucorp.co.uk if you needs assistance to do so.

If your CiviCRM is already on CiviCRM 4.7.x or 5.x plus and this is the first time you use an extension, please see Here for full instructions and information on how to set and configure extensions.

You can get the latest release of Membership Extras from CiviCRM extension directory page or our Github repository release page.

How to configure CiviProspect?

CiviProspect does not require any additional configurations. For basic CiviCase configurations, please visit here .

Searching for Non-Primary Data in CiviCRM

$

0

One of the questions we occasionally get from our clients concerns how users can search for non-primary emails, addresses, and phone numbers in CiviCRM.  Because so many constituents use different emails for different purposes - one for billing, one for bulk emails, and so forth - it can become a challenge to locate people in your data.  However, we have a couple of suggestions for how you can search across all emails, phone numbers, and addresses.

Option 1: Add Them to Your Search Results

By default, CiviCRM is set to search only primary information.  However, this is a very easy thing to change.  Go to Administer > Customize Data and Screens > Search Preferences, and find the option labeled “Search Primary Details Only.”  (See here if you’d like a visual.)  Set that to no, and save.

As a test, I added a contact with two different email addresses. With that search setting defaulted to yes, I searched for the email address boxed in the screenshot, and got no results.  Here is the result with the same search, after changing that field to no.

Note that this change unfortunately does not affect the quicksearch at the top left in CiviCRM.

Option 2: Use the Search Builder

If for some reason you prefer not to change the default search settings, you can also use the Search Builder to search for non-primary emails.  The Search Builder allows you to search for emails (or phone numbers, or addresses) with specific location types, so you can iterate through your non-primary location types to search as many options as you wish. Note that I used the “also search where” option, which essentially sets this up as an OR search: find contacts where home email is x OR where work email is x OR where billing email is x.

Here you see the result.

If you have a significant number of location types, this search option can be somewhat cumbersome.  However, it nevertheless is a good option for finding contact information based on a specific location type (or types).

Project Financials added to CiviCRM Stats Page

$
0

It’s been a long time coming, but we finally managed to post the Core Team’s financials online in a format that not only shows where we’re at but also breaks down our income and expenses over the past 12 months. We’ve maintained project stats online for some time at https://stats.civicrm.org so it made sense to just add a new tab there. Check it out here. The financials are currently updated each month, and we’ll continue to expand on them as we have capacity.

The purpose of providing these financial metrics is to help demonstrate how CiviCRM functions as well as how it’s currently funded.

Things we like to see in the numbers:

  1. Overall, we’re seeing some stability in income and expenses. While that’s good, most of this balancing has come in the form of a smaller core team. In and of itself, that’s not necessarily a bad thing and the community has stepped up to drive many initiatives.
  2. An increase in technology partners and in income from them. Tech partners integrate with CiviCRM but don’t host or implement. They also typically benefit financially from the integration, so it’s nice to see them giving back to the project. It’s truly a win win.
  3. We like to see the uptick in support for Extended Security Release. We are not where we want to be here, but the trend is positive.

Things we want to see improve:

  1. Even though it was never viewed as an income driver, Spark is mostly flat. The primary purpose behind Spark is to help grow the ecosystem, so it’s a bummer to not see it expanding. In fairness, we have not been aggressive at all in promoting it. At the same time, we have seen CiviCRM break 11k installs for the first time recently, so even though it’s not as a result of Spark, it is good to see the community expanding.
  2. Aside from technology partners, most community funding is flat or in decline. That’s not good... at all. In particular, make it happen campaigns and membership are very light. We have not pursued membership and have often toyed with scraping the program altogether. Nonetheless, both membership and MIH campaigns are among the best ways for the broader community to participate.
  3. Our receivables are high and they’ve been around for a while. That’s not good for anybody.

All that aside, you can take a look for yourself and get an overview of our funding. We’ll probably be on hand at the Summit in Barcelona as well to review of these in more detail along with discussions around the project in general. If you have any questions, find me @josh at https://chat.civicrm.org
